New year, new you (really, though)

In just a few days, it will be a whole new year! Man, 2016 has been a bumpy ride, on both a personal level and as a nation. The good news is, a new year is a fresh start, a chance to begin again. I must admit, I’m not a fan of resolutions. More often than not, those resolutions are out the window by February, and that leaves people feeling sorry for themselves, disappointed, and like a total failure. How inspiring. (NOT!)

I wish this coming year brings you everything you’ve ever dreamed AND MORE. But before we jump ahead, I think it’s only fair we release some of the muck. Few people talk about the muck, at least out loud or in public. But to me, this is one of the most essential steps needed to reach our dreams, and I got your back, sister! My hope for all of us, is that in the next few days before we ring in 2017, we can collectively release all that shit that isn’t serving us anymore. To make this time even more powerful, Wednesday and Thursday are the new moon, which is the perfect time to release the old and set our intentions for the coming cycle, month, and even year.

You may not think this applies to you, but hear me out. We take in so much goodness, like reading books, attending lectures, listening to podcasts, and repeating affirmations; but until we release that which is no longer serving us, our persistent complaints and road blocks will continue getting in our way to greatness. Think of it like any pesky recurring cold. We may consume lots of over-the-counter “band-aid” remedies, but unless we heal the root cause (excess sugars, too much dairy, or inflammatory foods), that cold is gonna haunt us again and again.

The same goes for the emotional hurdles we’re dealing with. Sure, it’s pretty and nice to sweep them under the rug, but until we face the things that are not serving us – whether it’s a way of being, an attitude, a belief or value – and release them to make space for the new, we will continue hitting road blocks.

Get ready to dive WITHIN, beautiful. Start with these 3 questions:

  1. Is there something that feels like unfinished business? Perhaps a fight with a friend, a conversation with your boyfriend, or the dynamic at work. If you think about a person or situation, and immediately feel icky inside, GO THERE.
  2. Is there an area in your life that has felt like a constant struggle (relationships, finances, work, family)? GO THERE.
  3. How are you showing up in those areas? Who are you being – both to yourself and to others? Perhaps you’re being short with your parents, or stingy with your love for an old girlfriend. GO THERE.

Now imagine what your life would look like if everything went your way in these places, if it all worked out better than you could ever dream. Seriously, stop reading right now and start to imagine, because it’s so juicy you’ll want to start going there immediately. (I’ll pause while you imagine this…. it’s so good, right?)

Who do you need to BE for that dream to come true? How will you show up differently for that to become your reality? Maybe you need to be confident, bold, and powerful for your dream career to unfold. Or open, loving, and supportive to fully nourish your friendships. Whatever it is, don’t shy away just yet, because the best is coming next.

Now that you’ve identified a way of being that isn’t serving you, how you release this is up to you. Some of my favorite ways are journaling, breathing, sharing my revelations with someone out loud (therapist, soul sister, husband), and movement (either yoga, dancing, a brisk walk, or working out). Remember that pesky cold – the root must come out. Try brainstorming your favorite ways to move energy out of your body, and visualize the energy coming out of your body, via breath, sweat, or excretion. Every individual is different, and I invite you to find your favorite ways to release.

Now, my dear, you have space for the new. And how magical that feeling is! Now we have a blank canvas to dream bigger, to paint our future with the most delicious picture, and to freely take divine actions from that new, incredible, powerful way of being to get us closer and closer to that reality. Now you have the space to manifest your best year yet!!!!

I get it. This isn’t everyday coffee talk for a lot of us. If you feel stuck, I’ll share a super personal example from my own life to help get your reflective juices flowing:

For as long as I can remember, money has been a major road block in my life. I always felt like I didn’t have ENOUGH to do the things I wanted to do. This story was on repeat in my head – whether I wanted to go shopping, leave a corporate job to pursue my dream career in healthy food, or take a trip with girlfriends. My persistent complaint was always “I can’t afford that right now.” Money became my obsession. I was determined to get more of it, all while protecting the money I had with sheer fear that it would disappear. For the last 3 years, I’ve made numerous budget sheets, but forgot about them a week later. I’ve bought dozens of books on personal finance, but stopped reading 1/3 of the way through. I’ve repeated countless affirmations on abundance and financial growth, but never acted beyond that. I hoped the money fairy would see me struggling and hear me reading my affirmations, shower me with free money, and ease my jump-off-a-cliff-level fears of being put out on the streets.

I can write a whole series of posts on my relationship to money, but to give you the cliff notes, it all boiled down to this: I have not been taking responsibility for my personal and business finances. I have not owned up to the fact that I’ve been spending more money than was coming in. I have been operating from a place of anxiety, fearful that I would never have enough.

As soon as I realized this, I began to see that this way of being no longer serves me. It keeps me a slave to my financial limitations, and spreads fear to other areas of my life. The greatest part of this all is, now that I realize this, I CAN LET THAT SHIT GO. I can journal, take a heated yoga class, visualize that fearful energy and old way of being lifting from my body into thin air.

Who I need to be to fulfill on my dreams is a woman of divine responsibility, power, and a woman of my word. By BEING responsible, powerful, and in integrity, I can take empowered actions towards my goals, both personally and professionally. And now that I’m releasing what no longer serves me, I can lovingly begin to dive in to what I want in the coming year. I don’t know about you, but I have big dreams for the next 12 months. Here’s what I’m manifesting in 2017:

  • Actively creating a loving, supportive, delicious marriage
  • Nurturing and growing my business
  • Deepening my yoga practice
  • Establishing financial security for my family
  • Building the foundations for my family to grow

What about you? What are the specific dreams you’re looking forward to manifesting in 2017? And psst: did you know that the more you share with others, the more REAL it gets? When we share with those around us, we can help lift each other up to greatness. So tell me, I truly want to know so I can cheer you on. We are in this together!

New year blessings,
